The Governors of the First School have decided that the swimming pool can not be used this season. There are problems with the heating and filtration equipment, as well as the day to day maintenance.

By virtue of the design of the pool, a high staffing ratio is required when the youngest children swim. As a practical and useful asset to the school, the pool has come to the end of it’s life.

However, we would like to take a fresh look and see if it is possible to renovate and upgrade the pool, so that it is useable for the First School, the Village College and the wider community. We would like to see the pool enlarged and covered, and I’m sure you would, too.

About 5 years ago we looked into the cost of putting a roof above the pool. The quotations received were for £40,000. Although there was some grant funding available, the balance simply did not exist in the school budget. Unfortunately, the funding position remains unchanged. If the pool is to be upgraded, we will need the support of the local community, the Parish Council, the District Council and the County Council. It is now likely to cost at least twice this amount.

For the project to succeed we will need to set up a management group to be responsible for the fundraising and subsequent running of the pool. The intention is for both village schools to use the pool and to run an annual subscription for residents to use the pool in the evenings and weekends. We are aware of other schools who successfully do this. They charge £50 per season per family for unlimited use. It is also hoped that swimming lessons for children could be held for the children outside school hours. Currently the waiting list at Saxon and Ernulf is 12 months.

At this stage we need three things.

  • Volunteers to manage the project.
  • An indication of how many people would pay about £50 per season to use the pool.
  • Pledges for the fund raising, that will be called upon if the project goes ahead.
